The health exam required for a green card or immigration purposes typically involves a medical examination conducted by a designated civil surgeon approved by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The exam aims to assess the applicant’s overall health and to screen for any communicable diseases or conditions that might pose a public health risk.

Here are some common requirements and components of the green card health exam:
- Medical History: You will need to provide medical history, including any past or current illnesses, surgeries, or medical treatments.
- Vaccination Record: You should bring documentation of your vaccination history, if available. Our Urgent Care center has vaccinations available on-site for your convenience. These include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis), influenza, Hepatitis B, Pneumococcal and Varicella (chickenpox), etc.
- Tuberculosis (TB) Screening: TB screening is usually required for green card applicants. This may involve a TB skin test (TST) or a blood test (IGRA) to check for tuberculosis infection. If the initial test is positive, further evaluation, such as a chest X-ray, may be required.
- Communicable Disease Screening: The civil surgeon will screen for other communicable diseases, such as syphilis and gonorrhea, through blood tests for ages 18 – 44 years.
- Mental Health Evaluation: While not always required, a mental health evaluation may be necessary if there are concerns about a mental health condition that could affect public safety or the applicant’s ability to care for themselves.
Our civil surgeon will complete Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record and provide it to you in a sealed envelope as required by USCIS for submission.
